BIOMIMESYS® Oncology is mostly composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), biofunctionnalized with undenaturated collagen I. HA, by interacting with its binding proteins (CD44, RHAMM, ICAM-1), is an active participant in inflammatory, angiogenic, fibrotic and cancer-promoting processes (Figure 1).

Figure 1 from Nikitovic et al., 2015 (Frontiers in immunology).

We are currently looking at the effect of different elastic moduli of BIOMIMESYS® Oncology on the growth and phenotype of different female cancers. Below you can see the expression of CD44 (in red) in breast cancer
cells (MDA-MB-231) and cervical cancer cells (Hela) cultivated in BIOMIMESYS® (two different elastic moduli) (Figure 2):

Figure 2: CD44 staining in female cancer cells in two versions of BIOMIMESYS (the commecial, soft version, and a rigid version).

Thanks to HCS technology, we could quantify the increased staining – and hence expression – of CD44 in the rigid condition compared to the soft BIOMIMESYS® matrix. If you are interested in CD44- and HA-related mechanisms, bring BIOMIMESYS® to your lab! We can provide you with both the classical and the customized BIOMIMESYS® matrices.
