Now, life science companies are seeking ways to modernise research environments and build the ‘Lab of The Future’ (LoTF). Given advances made in recent years, it’s natural that technology that can automate lab functions – including Artificial Intelligence (AI) – will play an important role in this modernisation drive.

In this article Nick Lynch, as a consultant at The Pistoia Alliance, talks about the evolution of laboratories in the pharmaceutical industry, the famous “LoTF”. It is definitely very close to our vision of the future that we have exposed at Forum LABO Paris in 2017. Automation will deeply change the everyday work of biologists, using Massive Data Mining to find previous results, Artificial Intelligence to be assisted in result understanding and Immersive Technologies to visualize data.

In this landscape, IA has a very special place because it is able to explore huge amounts of data, and to find hidden “laws” faster than people would do. It is interesting to read in the article that “the majority (46%) of AI projects in life sciences currently take place in early discovery or preclinical research phases”. However, this technology is not that simple to master, and finding the right partner is the key to success. This is exactly what we are doing now in HCS Pharma! We are implementing machine learning to increase the robustness of parameter extraction from 3D pictures, which means better results for our customers.
